About

Created in Dec 2009, this blog/site serves as an accessible means to contact and learn about Stephenson House in absence of the previous website, stephensonhouse.ca

Note: This blog does not represent the views of the Victoria University at U of T administration. It is maintained independently by 2009-2010’s Stephenson House members and we do not endorse the Vic admin’s new proposal for Stephenson House (see “Save Stephenson House” pages).

History:

Vic’s Stephenson House was a co-operative housing unit and community involvement residence at the Victoria University in the University of Toronto. Located at 63 Charles Street West, the house hosts ten undergraduate students per year. Stephenson House is self-governed and self-regulating, and it exists with the aim of creating a living environment that supports and encourages a sense of ownership, involvement, and responsibility, both at home and in the greater community.

As of April 21st, 2010, this blog will be an archive of S. House’s last year 2009-2010 memories and for its members of that year to stay in contact. It does not have any information about the new Stephenson House. Please contact Victoria College for that.

Interesting how, decades after the co-op movement began, you still cast women in the domestic/social roles and men in the power roles.

Oh, I am sure that is just a coincidence … absolutely no gender bias here. It was all democratic and that’s just how it turned out. Absolutely.

Thanks for your comment, Stella.

Just for reference, last year our President was Jenna, the treasurer was Craig, and the food shoppers were Sean and Alexander.

The year before, our President was Alexander, the treasurer was Jenna, and the food shoppers were Heather and Shawn.

Excluding the food buyers, every other member rotates cooking and cleaning duties for the house.

Things change every year, depending on which role each person is most interested in contributing to the House.
