Stephenson House Online

Located at 63 Charles St. West, Toronto, Ontario – Stephenson House was Victoria College at the University of Toronto's true student co-operative housing residence reflecting the will of Dr. Stephenson… now this blog will serve as an archive of memories of its last year (2009-2010) and for those house members to stay in touch with each other. SIYB! SHF!

Admin’s proposal passes in defining Board of Regents meeting

The administration’s new proposal passed today’s Board of Regents vote by a margin of 1 vote, (15 for the administration’s new proposal and 14 against). Craig was only allowed to speak once while President Gooch , who was in favour of the proposal, answered all the questions. This was biased.

Members weren’t voting for “free rent” – they were voting for keeping Dr. Stephenson’s bequest and that included co-operative living, community service and financial accessibility that meant the house would collect self-sustaining rent from its members.

Hundreds of signatures gathered in support of Stephenson House, dozens of students turned up to rally in support of the House right before the meeting. 4 dozen cookies baked for the rally. Countless months of negotiations and counter-proposals by Craig with the administration and President Gooch.

All of it lost, all of Stephenson House lost by 1 vote. Never in a board meeting was the vote a secret ballot. This one was. People are angry and unhappy. The ‘new’ Stephenson House will not be what Dr. Stephenson imagined.

It is certainly not what I would have liked my house to become. Then again, I already dismissed it as a lost cause when it stopped being an explicit requirement that tenants should wish to pursue a career in the United Church. I wrote it off altogether when it started accepting women.
